Description	Photograph of a map of a proposed Medical Center. "New 'Core' for City's Century. Medical Center a 'Significant' Step. Plans to turn California Hospital into a gigantic integrated medical center for the revitalized downtown Los Angeles area were disclosed yesterday by hospital administrators and members of the City Planning Department. A $3,000,000 expansion and modernization program, calling for construction of a nine-story wing on the north side of the present main building at the 1414 South Hope street, is the first step. Target date -- Work on the new wing can be started by January 1, 1959, according to Ritz E. Heerman, general manager of the hospital. At the same time, City Planning Director John E. Roberts unveiled a new proposed land use study designating the California Hospital site as ideal for the medical center needed in the central city district.
