Photograph of an exterior view of the Western Air Express airport, shown from a distance, [s.d.]. At center, a long building can be seen from a distance across the field in the foreground. Farther left, shacks can be seen near the building, while a structure that appears to be football uprights appears at right.; Writing along the bottom of the image reads: "Regular LA to NY line. 7 miles from post office. 1 mile southwest Montebello between Union Pacific and Santa Fe railway lines. High tension line on west. Altitude 200 feet. Size, 411 acres. 7500 E--W. 4047 N--S. Hangar in SE corner, 60x140. Man in charge day and night. Repairs; gas, phone, radio. Bus line passes hangar. West winds. As many airplanes visit field as used by owners of field".

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
