Description
Photograph of roadside near Santa Monica shoreline, showing large cliff to the right, [s.d.]. In the extreme foreground to the left, a small strip of road can be seen running adjacent to sand and vegetation. Further left, a flat cliff-face is visible beside the road with a small fence bordering the top. A similar fence can be seen running along the road to the right. To the right of fence near center, two small palm trees among various vegetation can be seen. Further to the right, a cliff with a rounded peak is visible. In the extreme background to the right, ocean waves hitting against the shore can be seen. Further in the background along the ocean, a large pier structure is visible beside a rectangular object. In the extreme background along the road, two vertical poles holding roadway signs can be seen.

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
