Description
Photograph of the "earliest known general view of Pueblo Ex- Mission San Juan Capistrano", from the hills west of Rio Trabuco, Orange County, California, ca.1887. Picture file card reads: "Roof still on part of western wing of mission. Ruined walls to north still high. Cuartel newly unroofed to provide tiles for newly erected railroad depot. High adobe mission walls from curartes south toward railroad depot still in evidence. Low ruins of eastern wall of old mission vineyard still to be seen between and paralleling the cuartel and railroad. To right center from these walls is large Pedro Verdugo adobe (since destroyed) built in 'L' shape, the white washed south wing (to right) dating from 1852 (built by Don Tomas Ramos) and the dark, un-plastered north wing dating from 1794 or 1807. Above and to right of depot area are seen the Hacienda Aguilar, the mission inn, and to the extreme right the high roof and dormer windows of Don Marcos Forster y Pico's large brick house "Las Rosas". Numerous adobes on both sides of long street in foreground between river and railroad are seen, of which only three are standing today." -- unknown author, ca.1980. Mountains are visible in the distance.
