Photograph of ocean at Santa Monica, showing fence in extreme foreground, [s.d.]. In the extreme foreground at center, a primitive fence constructed from wooden poles and branches can be seen extending at an angle into the far background to the right. Further to the right in the background, the top of a palm tree is barely discernable. To the far left in the background, a vast expanse of ocean is visible. Patches of clouds can be seen in the upper portion of the sky, while solid rows of clouds are seen in the extreme background. Also in the extreme background at center, it appears that a large rock jetty is extending into the ocean from the right to the left.

Description The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
