Description
Photograph of a "Close-up of Boulder Canyon on Colorado River where federal government proposes to transform the terrifying flood menace of the southwest into a rich national resource of electric power and water", ca.1920. The water barely ripples as it shines with sunlight and reflects the jagged rock wall on the right. The giant wall casts shadows over the smaller peeks on the left. More mountains can be seen faintly in the background.; Photoprint reads: "Plans advanced and approved by Secretary of the Interior Work and Secretary of Commerce Hoover provide for a self-financing method of taming the flood mad Colorado River. They recommend, and legislation now pending in Congress will provide, construction of the world's largest dam at Boulder Canyon on the Colorado. Towering 600 feet above stream level between the granite walls of the Canyon, Boulder Dam will hold back the River's annual flood waters and will create a site for the generation of 1,000,000 horsepower of hydro-electricity, U.S., Reclamation engineers point out. Congressional legislation drawn up on the recommendations of Secretaries Hoover and Work provides that no money is to be expended by the Government on the dam until its entire cost, plus interest charges, has been guaranteed through the sale of electric power and domestic water leases."
