The highway runs from the foreground at right to the background at left and is lined with automobiles. Three parking lots are visible in the foreground at center, and all three are full. A wide section of beach is visible at right, and hundreds of people can be seen on the sand, many under the shade of umbrellas. At left, a row of small shops can be seen along a side street.; Legible signs include, from left: "Sandwiches", "Fireworks", "Soda", "Ballantynes", "Volkman's Barbecue", "Bath House", "Rite Spot Barbecue", and "State Beach Dedication Here July 8".

California Historical Society Collection, 1860-1960
Description
The California Historical Society Collection is incomparable for the documentary picture it provides of the growth of Southern California, particularly the development of the Los Angeles region, between 1860 and 1960. The collection contains more than 25,000 photographs. The full archive was placed on long-term deposit at USC in 1990 and includes the Title Insurance and Trust Company Collection, also known as TICOR, and the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection.
