Description
Photograph of painting of interior plaza of San Fernando Mission, showing fountain at center, [s.d.]. In the extreme foreground at left, a large column can be seen extending to the top of the image. To the left and right, additional columns can be seen. Growing around each of the columns, clusters of grapevines can be seen. To the far right in the background, a group of three women, a child with a large hat, and a dog are visible. Behind the group, a barred gate can be seen extending to the far left. In the far background at center, a round fountain can be seen. The core of the fountain consists of smaller round plates creating a cascading effect. To the right of the fountain, a statue of a monk holding a wooden staff can be seen. Near the statue, a large tree is visible with branches extending near the fountain. In front of the fountain, four individuals can be seen in pairs. In the extreme background, several archways are visible.

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
