Description

Photograph of a view of the Signal Hill Oil Field in Los Angeles, 1930-1940. Hundreds of tall wooden oil derricks are visible throughout the field. The towers are tapered structures with platforms at the top and three-quarters of the way up. Near the base of the towers are large cylindrical tanks and assorted small wooden buildings. Two larger rectangular buildings can be seen at right. The land around the wells appears barren and is devoid of vegetation.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
