Description

Photograph of group of bronze columns, Nikko, Japan, [s.d.]. In the extreme foreground to the left, a decorative pillar can be seen. The body of the pillar is wide at the base, thin near the neck, and wide again near its top. Atop the pillar, a sphere is visible with a small rimmed half-dome resembling a hat on top. A small structure resembling a stem and flowers can be seen atop the dome. Behind the pillar, a sloped rectangular base is visible with a staircase seen to the left. A small tone rail also surrounds its upper perimeter. At center of the base, four small pillars can be seen connected to a large pillar. The body of the central column is completely cylindrical except near its top. A small sphere sits atop the structure. A symbol can be seen etched on the column near its top. Trees are visible in the extreme background.

Description The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
