Photograph of a drawing by Edward Vischer depicting a farewell in front of the earthquake-ruined Mission San Juan Capistrano, 1842. A man in a poncho and hat tends three horses while two other men shake hands at center, the ruins of the mission in the right background. A shack with a thatched roof is visible to the left and a portion of the mission's aqueduct can be seen between them. A man drives horses in the background to the right, while three other people lounge near a cart to the left. Text underneath the image reads "In Memory of R. Fray Jose Maria de Zalvidea Our Leavetaking in Nov. 1842."

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
