Description
Photograph of a view of Hill Street looking north from Fifth Street, Los Angeles, July 1928. The highly-ornamented one-story building of the [C]ollege Theatre can be seen to the left while pedestrians and automobiles navigate the street. Two men at the extreme right have gotten out of and are attending to their cars. Further down on the left, the Hill Street Terminal Market and the Hill Street Subway Terminal building can be seen along with the John Luchenbach Building, respectively. Other legible signs include: "Power Off", "Big Stars Only", "All Seats 10¢", "Big Double Bill", "Blondes by Choice / Claire Windsor Pretty Clothes", "Your Home Town Papers", "Foster & Kleiser", "Durant sales NOW greatest in Durant history", "Leighton Dairy Lunch", "Subway Public Market", "Shine L.A. Hat Cleaning", "Leighton California Bakery", "People's", "Shoe Repair", and "Switch".

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
