Description
Photograph of an exterior view of the Mission San Juan Capistrano, ca.1876. Two women and a young girl stand in the center foreground, in front of a depression in the ground that stands beside the mission. A large, stone building appears to be collapsing in areas to the right, while two sections of adobe cloisters are visible to the left, in front of which a horseman sits astride his horse. The cloister at center appears in good repair. However, the cloister running perpendicular to it farther to the left has its terracotta-tiled roof caving in at spots, and appears to have lost much of its spackle. Several other men stand near a wooden corral near the fallen building's rubble. Picture file card reads: "Rare Picture showing in center foreground the ancient masonry pila or tank in which the Indians washed in mission times. To the center above the pila may be seen the ruined adobe walls remaining from the attempt in 1862-1863 to rebuild the stone church with adobes. At that time four of the remaining somes and the stone lantern were blown down with gun powder. Much of the masonry debris may be seen in the corner of the church. It was later turned into lime by Padre Hose [Jose?] Mut (1866-86) at San Juan in old Mission Kilns, still existing. The long building to the left is the barracks or cuartel of the mission. This picture is believed to be the only one in existence clearly showing practically all the tiles till on the cuartel roof. Another interesting point is the triangular shaped façade on the building to the left of the campanario. This was altered in 1887 to the modern shape which it now has. The road seen in the extreme lower right hand corner of the ancient Camino Real.".
