Description
Photograph of a painting (lithograph)by Peter R. Woltze, which depicts two views of the shrine for the worship of Methras, god of light, [s.d.]. The small brick hut of the shrine is pictured from a distance in the top image, a small well pictured in the foreground, surrounded by wooden rails. Latin text beneath it reads: "Mithraeum Cum Fonte Perenni". The top image is decorated outside its frame to either side by watercolor paintings of statuary and artifacts. The lower image shows a more detailed shot, with the interior of the shrine visible. An altar is shown at the back of the shack, flanked to either side by a statue. Long platforms lead away from them to the front of the shrine, where they terminate in descending steps. A urn is pictured next to the left set of steps. A cobbled walkway is pictured in front of the shrine, with trees pictured in the background. The text under the image reads: "Mithraei Par Interior". Woltze wrote "Frankfurt" below his name in the lower right corner.
