Description
Photograph of a painting depicting Socrates in prison, Rome (or Athens?), [s.d.]. Socrates is pictured at center surrounded by adorers, wearing the only lightly-colored toga in the image. He holds the bowl of hemlock in his right hand while he puts his left on the head of a kneeling disciple whose hands are clasped in pleading. A woman and child are pictured farther to the right. One of two stools is overturned to the left, where two other mourners weep at the couch. The brick walls of the prison are evident in the background.
