Abstract
Supporting children impacted by the criminal justice system contributes to the social work grand challenge of smart decarceration and is the focus of the present program. Interference with the cultural norm of incarceration will be gained through providing advocacy services for children whose parents are incarcerated. Intergenerational incarceration occurs when children and grandchildren of incarcerated individuals have interactions with the criminal justice systems as youths and adults. This cycle is perpetuated by the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) which hinder healthy growth and development. Incarceration of an individual within a child’s home has been identified as an ACE and therefore can contribute to difficulties throughout a child’s lifespan. An advocate will be assigned to children whose parents are incarcerated in two prison facilities in Kern County, California to provide counseling services including art therapy, individual, and group sessions. At-home, app-based mindfulness training will include a link to an on-call advocate for the child outside of regular meeting times. The advocate will also connect the child with their parent through providing school updates (such as parent-teacher conference information, art work, and book/homework lists), as well as pre- and post-visit debriefings for children who physically visit an incarcerated parent. Coping skills assessment will be conducted prior to initiation of services, at the six-month mark, and one year after the start of services to determine effectiveness of services and collect data for the development of future programs.
