Description
Photograph of a view of the Angels Flight, showing both cars and the tower, Los Angeles, [s.d.]. Two sets of rails allow the cars to pass each other at the center of the trip. At the top of the hill is a three-story tower. In front of the tower is an advertisement for a café showing the letters "café" and a hand pointing to the right in lights. To the left of Angels Flight is the Elks Hall, a seven-story square building. On its rooftop is a pergola-like structure that surrounds the perimeter of the roof.; Legible signs include: on a sign above the underpass "Notice, $100.00 fine for riding, driving or propelling any vehicle faster than eight (8) miles per hour in this tunnel, see ordinance 15775", "G[...]en Villa, furnished rooms", "hotel", "café".

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
