Description

Photograph of a Caterpillar two-ton pulling a Killefer disk harrowing in an orange grove in Olive, ca.1930. The tractor leaves grooves in the soil as it drags the metal disk from the foreground on the left into the distance at center. The driver wears a hat and suspenders and faces the background as he drives through the center of two opposing lanes of orange groves. The small, round oranges stand out against the dark leaves of the trees.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
