Description
Photograph of a U.S. Coast Survey showing the entrance to San Diego Harbor, ca.1859. A topographical map of Point Loma is at left, while in the upper right corner, a smaller map shows the entire bay and harbor. The map of Point Loma also shows Ballast Point, La Playa, Zuninga Shoal and West Base. The smaller map shows the Pacific Ocean, Point Loma, La Playa, Fitchs Hill, San Diego and New San Diego. Compares to CHS-10001, CHS-10002 and CHS-10003; other maps of California coast from same coast survey.

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
