Description
Photograph of a view of San Diego's 5th Street in the Chinese division with a 4th of July parade, 1903. A procession of people are visible from behind walking towards the upper right on a paved road running from bottom left towards the top right. To the left, a crowd of people are visible standing on the side of the road watching the parade. Three-story buildings with flat roofs are visible behind the crowd, and utility poles line the street. People can be seen looking out of windows on the buildings, and signs are visible on the buildings reading, "John B. Starkey. Cigars" and "Furnished Rooms". A utility pole and American flag are visible in the foreground. Photoprint reads, "South of 5th Street in 7' ground 'D' Street. Broadway crossing".

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
