Description
Photograph of the Downey building in the Downey block, at the junction of Temple Street and Main Street near Spring Street, 1887. The building stands about two-stories tall and is very wide. The second floor, clearly visible, has an arcade of windows. Two doors open on a balcony enclosed by a balustrade, overlooking the street. The balcony shades the sidewalk below. Horse-drawn carriages move up and down the street and are parked along the side of the building. A handful of pedestrians can be seen on and near the roadway. Tracks curve up the dirt roadway. There's a "County Bank" across the street from the Downey Building. Many other buildings are visible behind the building. Legible signs include: "Apothecaries Hall", "County Bank", "City of Paris". Additional Information: Originally, the photograph was captioned as "Federal Building in the Downey block, 1887". Nevertheless, the Downey building was demolished 1904, and replaced by the US Post Office and Federal Building, which opened in 1910 (demolished in 1937).
