Description
Photograph of the exterior of the Temple Block, downtown Los Angeles, from the south, Spring Street and Main Street, looking north from Market Street, ca.1890. The 2-story brick building situated on the corner houses numerous businesses and has awnings shading the storefronts on the ground floor. Other buildings are visible adjacent and behind. Horse-drawn carriages and pedestrians are on the sidewalk or on the dirt street down which runs streetcar rails. Legible signs include: "206, Anthony Schwann, 200, associate cut rate ticket broker, notary republic", "Books & stationery", "R.E. Mor[...] shirts made to order", "Wellborn and Hutton law office", "Anthony Schwann Association R.R. ticket broker, notary public", ..."San Francisco"..., "Rates to Denver, Kansas City, Chicago, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, and everywhere", "Pabst Milwaukee Bohemian lager", "Pioneer Truck Co.", "New U.S. Hotel".

Description The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
