Description
Photograph of a sugar beet shaped like a bird (ancient Los Angeles bird?), an unidentified exhibit at the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, ca. 1900-1920. The beat has a large round body with three extended roots that resemble two legs and a feathered tail. The upper portion of the beet resembles a head. The head has two dimples in it where a coin or a slug was affixed to make it resemble the bird's eyes. A bow tie is tied around the neck of this owl-like replica. A cloth covers the background and the platform on which it stands in order to create the neutral background effect. A sign in front of the bird reads, "Ain't I a bird?"
