Title Exterior view of the (first) Los Angeles Examiner Building, 509-511 South Broadway, ca.1906
Description Photograph of the exterior view of the (first) Los Angeles Examiner Building, 509-511 South Broadway, ca.1906. The building stands about five-stories tall. Its name is displayed prominently in lights and large letters at the following areas: above the roof (in lights), in the middle of the building (in lights), and above the first floor (large letters). The sign in the middle of the building is situated directly below an eye-shaped object, which symbolizes an eye or a pair of glasses (?). Part of the American flag (in lights), disfigured to fit the area, covers the bottom portion of the eye. Two other buildings flank the Examiner building. A fire escape ladder is visible on the left building. Two lampposts on the sidewalk have signs that advertise the Sunday paper. A man stands peering into the window of a business where pictures are displayed. Another man stands on the sidewalk next to a horse-drawn carriage parked on the dirt road in front of the Examiner building. Three bicycles are parked along the curb. Legible signs include: "Los Angeles Examiner", "511, 599", "[...]re", "for rent", "Carri[...]", "harness [...]", ..."Steele, Balsa & Walker [...], temporary office"..., "T.A. Asbridge, brick contractor", "lions in native wilds, Sunday's Examiner", "an American paper for the American people", "light lunch".
