Description

Photograph of orange groves in Southern California, ca.1910. A dirt road lined with pebbles extends into the distance on the right with orange groves on either side. The trees have short, thick trunks and thick portions of leaves on their branches. Several short palm trees stand in a cleared yard in the foreground on the right with rocks scattered in the dirt around them. A fence extends across the end of the road in the distance.

Title Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Collection 1890-1960

Description The more than 3,600 unique photographs of this collection document the Chamber's promotional efforts during the city's early years. In addition to stock photographs, there are pictures of the elaborate booths and displays that the Chamber prepared for use at state fairs and international trade shows. The photographic collection contains images showing the growth of important municipal enterprises, such as ground transportation systems, aviation, and shipping. In addition there are about 1,000 lantern slides in this collection -- not yet fully digitized.
