Description
Photograph of a view of Alcatraz Island and Prison in San Francisco Bay, ca.1906. The island is at center and is surrounded by the calm water of the bay. The steep rocky slopes of the mountain are topped by the light-colored stone and brick prison building. Most of the prison has two stories, and there is a tall narrow lighthouse at center. The land on the opposite side of the bay is visible in the distance. In addition to being a fort and a prison, Alcatraz has been the oldest operating lighthouse on the West Coast.
