Photographic portrait of the photographer Dr. George Wharton James (1858-1923), ca.1908. Taken outdoors, he is sitting looking away from the camera with his body is turned slightly to his right. He is seated with his left leg over his right and with his right arm hugging onto the wooden chair he holds his other hand. He has dark wavy hair combed up and back from his face and a long dark beard with mustache. He is wearing dark three-piece suit, a tie with light streaks, and a white shirt. His jacket is unbuttoned. He appears to be in his 30's or 40's.

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
