Description
Photographic portrait of Tom Hockett, California, ca.1900. Hockett, the Native American who guided the first white men into Inyo County, is shown here in a sweater, torn pants and a hat, and can be seen leaning on an axe-handle. He stands in the forest with fallen branches and dead leaves at his feet. When his tribe learned that he had guided the white men, they broke his hands. He wears a tortured expression on his elderly, weathered face.
