Description
Photograph of the exterior view of the Smiley Library, Redlands, ca.1900. The two-story Spanish-style building features multicurved parapets, arched windows, turret-like towers and a larger dome-capped tower near the corner of the building. Many of the arched corridors and windows have ornamental traceries. The lower portions of the arcade and several walls of the building appear to have been constructed of stone masonry. Dark clouds sparsely cover the sky. A palm tree stands on the front yard in front of the arcade.; "Welcome to the A.K. Smiley Public Library and its museum, the Lincoln Memorial Shrine. Serving the citizens of Redlands since 1894, the Smiley consists of the following divisions: Adult Services, Children's Services, and Special Collections (which includes the Lincoln Memorial Shrine). The A.K. Smiley Public Library is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is designated as a State Historical Landmark. The Smiley is recognized as one of California's oldest and most important public libraries and noted for its research archives, reference, and rare book collections. Owned and funded by the City of Redlands, the Smiley is administered by a five-member Board of Trustees, a Library Director and is operated by 21 full-time and 14 part-time employees. Many volunteers from its active Friends of the Library organization also enrich services." -- Smiley Public Library website.
