Description
Photograph of a birdseye view of the junction of Temple Street, Spring Street, and Main Street looking northeast from the Poundcake Hill, ca.1879. At the center of the image is a long building with an elaborate façade dominated by large arched windows; this building was the first home of the Farmer's and Merchants Bank located on Main Street and Commercial Street. The smaller building adjoining it to the right was at one time the Commercial Bank, and to the right of that is the Lanfranco Building ("El Dorado Store"). Also, the photograph features the following buildings: In the lower left corner the St. Athanathius Episcopal Church (1864-1891, the first Protestant church in Los Angeles) can be seen at New High Street and Temple Street. Just above it, the two-story brick building that housed the Mirror Printing Office, the forerunner of the Los Angeles Times is visible. Above it, the Downey Block (1872-1904) can be seen at the north-west corner of Main Street and Temple Street. To the right, across Temple Street and, again, across Spring Street, the Temple Block (1871-1927) is visible. On the dirt street in front of this building is a streetcar. The rest of the city in this area appears to be made up of commercial buildings and shops, and there is a factory spewing smoke into the air in the background.
