Photograph of a view of Western Avenue looking north from Expostion Boulevard, 1924. Automobiles make their way back and forth down the paved road at center, a florist's van moving away in the righthand lane. Brick commercial buildings line the street to either side, along with utility poles. To the right, a two-story brick building has been vacated and brandishes a "For Rent" sign just outside its door. A dividing line is visible down the center of the road.; Legible signs from left to right read: "Card & Schwarz Reality Co.", "Double Bungalow", "Croy", "Quality Laundry", "Eat", "Wizard Service Station", "Hal Malone Gasoline Deluxe", "Tailoring, Cleaning, Pressing", "33x4 Oversize Cords, $13.50", "30x3 1/2 Heavy Non Skid, $6.50", and "34x4 1/2 Oversize Cords, $17.50".

Description The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
