Description
Photograph of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Building, on Broadway between First Street and Second Street, ca.1901-1911. The cornerstone was laid on 28 May 1903. The 7-story brick and stone building has an American flag flying from the roof and a fire escape down the right front of the structure. There are commercial establishments on the ground floor. A man stands on the sidewalk looking into a store front. A bicycle is parked along the curb. Street car rails are visible in the street.; Legible signs include: "Chamber of Commerce", "Maier & Zobeleim, Pilsner Beer", "Allan Hunter, Eagle Stables", "Inner Americana, Temple Auditorium, Wednesday night, May 24", "124, Consolidated Bank", "126, Wait a week for new Huntington Beach t[...], lots $150 and [...], make your reservations, A[...], Blicker & Shoemaker, general real estate [...]ers", "Spring Street [...] store about June 20", "The Herald, How far will the squirrel travel", "The Waldo[...], bottled in bond g[...]".

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
