Description
Photograph of exterior view of Van Nuys City Hall (aka Valley Municipal Building), ca.1934. In the foreground, a paved road can be seen extending from left to right. At left, two cars park against the opposite curb along the street, and a small lamppost on the sidewalk can be seen to the far right. In the background at center, the Van Nuys City Hall building is visible. The structure is composed of a two-story rectangular base with wings and a large rectangular section at center at least eight-stories in height. A set of steps lead to the front entrance framed by two large columns. Small windows dot the base of the structure. Along the central part of the structure, small windows can be seen along each level, and three arched windows stretch along its center. A hexagonal slab sits atop the rectangular structure, and a large spire can be seen jutting from its center. The Van Nuys City Hall was built in 1932 as the Valley Municipal Building and designed as a miniature of Los Angeles City Hall building by architect Peter K. Shaborum. Originally the building housed a hospital in one wing of the base and the police department and muncipal court, complete with jail, in the other wing.
