Photograph of a view of First Street looking east from Hill Street after widening, Los Angeles, [s.d.]. First Street is at center and is a wide, six lane road lined with concrete sidewalks. The intersection of First and Hill is visible in the foreground at right. Many automobiles can be seen parked along the side of First, and several more are driving in the middle of it. In the background at center, the Los Angeles Times Building is visible, while the Central Police Station can be seen in the foreground at right.; Legible signs include, from left to right: "Storage Day or Month", "Cultivators", "Café", "Assayers", "Miyako Hotel", "Wilson Building", "Coca Cola", "The Times", "Hotel", "Nardoni", "Times Mirror Printing & Binding House", "Central Police Station Division No. 1", "Traffic Division", and "Symphonies Under the Stars Hollywood Bowl".

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
