Description
Photograph of detail of a painting by Monkascy depicting Christ's crucifixion, [s.d.]. There are three men being crucified in the painting, all of them bearded and shirtless, clothed only in a cloth around their waists. Jesus is at the center of the picture, and three women are kneeling at the base of his cross, crying, while a man looks on. Behind the woman on the left is a turbaned man holding a hatchet and a ladder, and behind him is a large crowd. In the right foreground is a soldier in a chest plate holding a spear, while in the left foreground is a surprised man wearing a turban and looking up at Christ. Compares to: CHS-9635.

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
