Description
Photograph of an inventory page of mission property at San Carlos, Monterey, ca.1770. The document is signed by Commisario Prefect Vicente Francisco de Sarria and Secretary Pedro Cabot. The inventory was correct according to them. It is entitled "Inventario de la Mision de San Carlos de Monterey que comienza en el año de 1770".; "En ocho dias del mes de Enero del ano 1914, el R.P. de Filosofia, Sr.Vicente Francisco de Sarria, Commisario Prefect de las misiones que son cargo del colegio de Propaganda Fide de San Fernando de Mexico visito este libro donde cansan copiada encumplimento del orden de los superiores, las [?] y demas que hasta este punto se ha mandado; y lo hallo debido orden y claridad, y para que cante lo mismo conmigo [?] de la visita." -- partial transcription.

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
