The image shows an enlarged section of a page from a Mission register written in the hand of Father Francisco Palou, friend and biographer of Father Junipero Serra. The document concerns the foundation, support, and patronage of the missions by Father Serra, Señor Juan Antonio Maria Bucanelli y Yrseca, and Señor Marquez de Croija.; "Missioneros de Llzo [?] Apostolica Colegio de San Fernando, Nombrados por el R.P.E. Junipero Serra Presidente de todas las missiones. [New paragraph] Fundose esta Mission haruiendo ya concluido su Virreynato el exemo Sr. Marquez de Croija, y en friado en su luscix el 2 ya mo Sr. Juan Antonio Maria Bucanelli y Yrseca por haber encaroado de nusco la Fundacion, y Patrocinado con igual zeto que su unfecessor. Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
