Description
Photograph of a birdseye view of Los Angeles looking east on First Street from Hill Street, ca.1889. An unpaved 1st Street bisects the scene at center, with horse-drawn carts parked along the sidewalks that line it to either side. To the left, a two-story Victorian-style house can be seen above another rooftop, while a squat, long, flat-roofed building can be seen still farther back behind some tree cover. To the right, another house with multiple bay windows is visible in the foreground, giving way to taller, factory-style buildings in the background, a sign on one of which to the far left reading "People's Store". Hills are visible in the background. CHS-8034 contains most of both CHS-8034A and CHS-8034B but is part of an incomplete panorama which contains CHS-8034C. The first Times Building is also supposedly visible, under construction. CHS-8034C: The roofs of two, one-story Victorian-style houses can be seen in the foreground, behind which a collapsing shack is visible. Farther back, taller, more industrial-looking buildings are prominent, along with the First Presbyterian Church at center. Farther right, a second, less ornate church can be seen obscuring a sign on the side of a building which reads "Pianos and Organs". Mountains are visible in the background.
