Description
Photograph of the painting "Venus Anadyomene" by Bocklan, depicting a nude woman raised from the sea by cherubs, [s.d.]. The woman is pictured in full figure at center, her dark hair cropped short to her head. Above, cupids pull on strands of seaweed to raise her from the sea, the centermost in the act of putting a garland on her head. Beneath the woman's feet, a hump and splashing tail are visible, suggesting a whale, although the eyes painted on what is visible of the head seem cartoonish and primate-like. A rocky island is visible along the horizon in the distance.; "Anadyomene is a name of Aphrodite when she was represented as rising from the sea. Aphrodite was the Greek goddess of love. The Romans called her Venus." -- unknown author.
