Core Title
Kiuic Photographs
Collection description
"Kiuic (key-wyk)"
"The archaeological site known as Kiuic is found in the Puuc region, some 60 miles south of the Yucatán capital of Mérida. The site, dating from 600 BC to 1000 AD, in the Classic Period, and whose architecture has been well preserved, extends several kilometers from the site nucleus. The Kiuic site has an impressive amount of standing architecture reflecting some of the styles of the Puuc Hills, using rows of columns on outer walls similar to those found at Labná, Kabáh and Sayil."
"Travelers John Lloyd Stephens and Federick Catherwood stayed here as they explored and sketched the ruins of Kiuic in 1840, (which they spelled as Kewick) revealing many unknown aspects of ancient Maya civilization to the world."
"There are several unique and important structures in urgent need of excavation and preservation, including the magnificent Casa de las Diamantes (House of Diamonds), first illustrated by Frederick Catherwood in John Lloyd Stephens’ publication 'Incidents of Travel in Yucatan,' Volume II. Ceramic research at the site of Kiuic indicates that it was occupied in 900-800 B.C." -- Payne Johnson.
“See also John Lloyd Stephens, 'Incidents of travel in Central America, Chiapas, and Yucatan,' with numerous engravings. Revised from the latest American edition, with additions, by Frederick Catherwood. London: Arthur Hall, Virtue & Co., 1854.
