Description
Photograph of a crowd gathered around a locomotive on Opening Day at Union Station in Los Angeles, April 1, 1939. The large mass of people is in the foreground and stretches into the distance at right. A Southern Pacific Railroad steam locomotive pulling a single passenger car is in the middle of the crowd. The clock tower and arched entryway of Union Station are at left. The station is a large building with smooth light-colored walls and a massive arched window at left. The area directly in front of the station is decorated with trees, and a tall light post is visible at right. In the background at right are more buildings. The clock on the rectangular tower of the station shows the time to be just after two o'clock.; It is possible that the locomotive in the picture is the one that that belonged to Collis P. Huntington. It was the first locomotive purchased by the Southern Pacific Railway and currently sits on display in the California State Railway Museum in Sacramento, CA.
