Description
Photograph of the exterior view of the Mason Opera House, on Broadway, ca.1908. The opera house stands about four stories tall with six buttresses providing structural support. There are five windows on the second, third and fourth floor. Two fire escape ladder wells are visible on either side of the structure. The roof is constructed of a fancy tile that forms ridges, which are similar to but more noticeable than Spanish-style tiles. Two men stand to the right of the building conversing near street lamp. Two other men can be seen talking near the end of the building at left. A horse-drawn carriage and a bicycle are parked next to curb.; Legible signs include: "Johnstone Jones law offices", "Venice Del Rey Land and Water Co., E. Francis Leo", "1902, AD, Mason Opera House", "Western Assurance Co., British America Assurance Co., United Firemens Ins. Co.", "D.M. [...]kens Agent", "E.L. Blanchard fire insurance, Western Assurance Co.", "E.A. Summers", "Law offices of Henry T. Gage and W.I. Foley", "room 204, T. Newman, publisher, advertising", "J.C. Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
