Description
Photograph of a northward view of the City Market on San Pedro Street from south of Sixth Street in Los Angeles, ca.1918. San Pedro Street runs across the image in the foreground and is marked by a set of streetcar tracks and the shadows of overhead utility wires. There is a single horse-drawn wagon near the curb at left. The large city market runs along the street and is a long, dark, single-story brick building. There are several large wooden gates that lead into the marketplace, and all are closed. There are two awnings at right, and the roof of a tall, warehouse-like building is at right. A line of utility poles runs along the sidewalk parallel to the market walls.; Legible signs include, from left to right, "609", "611", "Car Lots Apples, Bananas, Cheese, [Eg]gs.", "Weyl-Zuckerman & Co." "Car Lots Potatoes, Onions, Beans, Nuts", "Los Angeles Box & Basket Co.", "A.B. Chittenden with Wright & Callender Company So. Hill", "Arant- Whiting Wholesale Produce 613", "Oklahoma Produce & commission Co.", "[C]rown Flour Warehouse", "J. Wills Wholesale Fruits Produce", and "Wieland's Lager Beer".
