Abstract In the 2020s, metafictional video games, or metagames, are no longer new to the mass audience. From classics like The Stanley Parable (2013) and Undertale (2015) to new ones like There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension (2020) and Inscryption (2021), indie developers have popularized this genre of games-about-games. But still, few of them are games about themselves, and nearly none of them is documenting their creation process. A Game Called Paako, my interactive media master’s thesis, poses a challenge to design a reasonably recursive metagame by telling the story of its own creation process from the top to the end, therefore filling the gap in the current discourse and the state of the art.
