Description
Photograph the Los Angeles and San Pedro Alameda Street Station, the first railroad into Los Angeles, ca.1875. A locomotive hauling its tender, four empty cars, a covered car and a caboose is stopped in front of the railroad station. A man is standing on the walkway at the rear of the train's caboose. Another man stands on the ground at the rear of the train. People are standing around at the side of the station to wait for their train. To the right of the train station is a small grocery store. Legible signs include: "L.A. & S.P.R.R.", "grocery & ba[...]". Additional information: “During February 1869, several attempts were made to buy a lot at the corner of Aliso and Alameda streets for use as a depot site. This… lot was owned by a Mrs. Madigan, who demanded $14,000 in gold for her property… Finally, the project was dropped, and the “present” [sic] lot was purchased from John G. Downey and James F. Burnes… The two lots… were located on the southwest corner of Alameda and Commercial Streets" -- Franklyn Hoyt, "Los Angeles & San Pedro: First Railroad South of the Tehachapis", p. 331 (https://www.jstor.org/stable/25156449).
