Description
Photograph of Mrs. Barclay's residence covered with La Margner roses, [s.d.]. In the extreme foreground on either side of the image, a palm tree can be seen framing the image. In the background at center, a small set of steps can be seen leading to a simple one-story home. A small garden can be seen in front of the building at the left and right near patches of lawn. On the right side of the building, an array of roses completely covers the walls and windows. The roses extend up to the roof of the home.; Caption reads: "17, La Margner roses at cottage of Mrs. Barclay, Spring Street. Views of Los Angeles and vicinity in mid-winter. J.B. Blanchard & Co., 715 N. Main St., Los Angeles, Cal." Printed on back of photoprint: "Blanchard, Los Angeles. Portrait, viewing and commercial photography in all its branches. Views of residences, gardens, interiors and business houses our specialty. Headquarters for mounted and unmounted views of Los Angeles and vicinity. J.B. Description The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
