Description
Photograph of an exterior view of two homes on Spring Street during winter, [s.d.]. Just right of center, a paved walkway is flanked by squat palm trees. At the end of the path, a two-story Queen Anne-style home can be partially seen. Farther left, a second two-story Queen Anne is pictured, featuring a domed tower at its far left side. Small trees on a patch of crenulated grass separate the two buildings.; Caption on front of print reads: "Best & Co. View photographers. 505½ South Sprint Street, Los Angeles, Cal." Printed on the back of the photoprint: "For sale, wholesale or retail. Views of Los Angeles, Pasadena, Mount Lowe, Mount Wilson, Riverside, Redlands, Catalina Island, Long Beach, Terminal Island, Redond, Santa Monica, Mammoth Wharf, Yosemite Valley, etc., etc. Sole agents for Stanley plates. Developing and printing for amateurs. Best & Co., 505½ South Spring St., Los Angeles, California."

Description
The nearly 15,000 unique photographs of this collection contain the work of C.C. Pierce which cover the Los Angeles region city, street and architectural views, California Missions, Southwestern Native Americans, and turn-of-century Nevada, Arizona, and California. Pierce, active from 1886 to 1940, was one of the leading photographers of his day and amassed a collection of 15,000 images, including his own and those bought and copied from his contemporaries, George Wharton James and Charles Puck. The James collection contains over 2,000 images of portraits, customs, ceremonies, arts, and games of various groups of Southwestern Native Americans.
