Description
1 image. Leave for Berlin, 14 July 1959. Film director and Mrs. Gerd Oswald. (Handout).; Supplementary material reads: "Film Director Gerd Oswald bids wife, Marjoree, au revoir before flying to Berlin for anti Commee film".; Supplementary material reads: "Irwin Franklyn Company. Publicity. Public Relations. Exploitation. 186 North Canon Drive, Beverly Hills, California Bradshaw 2-9931. For L.A. Examiner. Gerd Oswald, distinguished Hollywood director, flew to Berlin last night (13) via S.A.S. Polar Flight from Los Angeles International Airport to direct 'Leather Jackets' for a West German film producer that already has the Communist East Germans protesting. According to Oswald, the film gets its title from those 'angry young men of Europe' who identify their class by the leather jackets they wear. 'These are the youth of the old world,' the director pointed out, 'who have neither a past, present or future. The young girls they court, who also don leather jacket identifications, are likewise fast becoming world problems'".; Supplementary material continues: "Objection to the film's theme by political East Germany springs from the fact that the Leather Jackets found their inception in East Berlin because of the futility of life under Communist rule. Shortly after World War II their Communist masters urged them to invade West Germany to incite trouble among the youth of the Bonn government, but the action proved to be a boomerang for the Reds. To date the East German Communist government has only protested the making of the film to West Germany. Because these objections have been ignored the Reds now threaten to place the matter before the U.N. Oswald, who has directed some of Hollywood's outstanding films, including Bob Hope's 'Paric Holiday,' 'Night People', 'Man On A Tightrope,' and 'Screaming Mimi,' is the son of Richard Oswald, once Germany's foremost director who was forced to flee Nazi terror in 1938 and now lives in retirement here. 'Leather Jackets,' written by the Hungarian scenarist and playwright, Laslo Fodor, will be produced in English, German, French, and Italian by Artur (cq) Brauner for CCC Film Studios and will be released in the United States by United Artists".
