Description
1 image. Arrival from Hawaii vacation, 20 June 1954. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Eaton (son-in-law and daughter of Governor Knight). (Handout).; Supplementary material reads: "Mr. and Mrs. Robert Eaton, son-in-law and daughter (Marilyn) of California Governor Goodwin Knight, arrived Sunday morning aboard a Pan American Airways Stratoclipper from a Hawaii vacation. They had cut their visit short on news of the announcement of the Governors forthcoming marriage to Mrs. Virginia Carlson. Knight has announced the date of the wedding to be within three weeks. His daughter, Marilyn, said at International Airport that she knew only of her father's intentions, but not exactly when, and that it came as a surprise when she read of it in Honolulu newspapers". (...continued); Supplementary material continues: "They had missed an overseas call from the governor last week in Hawaii, Mr. and Mrs. Eaton said. His daughter said she had no idea as to in what church the ceremony would be held, but remarked, 'it will be in Los Angeles.' 'It's just grand!' was her reply to a question, how she felt now that she was being replaced as California's First Lady. Governor Knight had seen the couple off to Hawaii Friday, June 11, and news stories broke later that afternoon of his engagement to Mrs. Carlson. He did not appear at the airport to greet them upon their return Sunday morning".
