1 image. Tanker explosion, January 19 1953. San Pedro Pacific Avenue and Miraflores District rocked by explosion. (Sleeve reads: A-9697).; Supplementary material reads: "Gershon. City desk. Ilus. Tanker explosion. San Pedro's Pacific Avenue and Miralores district were rocked by an explosion which occurred while Robert Hizer, a welder, was welding on the side of the tank truck shown in pic. The blast brought down power lines, shattered glass in nearby windows, and sent shrapnel hurtling through the air. Part of latter punched hole in automobile parked behind truck. No one was seriously hurt, Hizer however was sent to hospital to have ears checked".

Description The Los Angeles Examiner Photographs Collection consists of approximately 1.4 million prints and negatives from the Los Angeles Examiner newspaper. It was a daily newspaper, published in the afternoon on weekdays (Herald-Express) and in the morning on weekends (Examiner). The afternoon and morning papers merged in 1962 (Herald Examiner).

Coverage is broad including crime, sports, society, art, and entertainment. The collection forms part of the Hearst Collection and was a gift from the Los Angeles Herald Examiner Division of the Hearst Corporation in 1978.

The Los Angeles Examiner Negatives Collection (1950-1961) consists of approximately 215,000 4x5-inch negatives from the Los Angeles Examiner newspaper.

The Los Angeles Examiner Prints Collection consists of approximately 1.2 million photoprints from the Los Angeles Examiner newspaper.
